Cura is 3D slicing software from Ultimaker that prepares a 3D model for printing, suitable for use with students at Upper KS2 and beyond.
Cura is simple but powerful 3D slicing software produced by Ultimaker. The print profiles are optimised for Ultimaker 3D printers, but the softwre will slice 3D files for any 3D printer brand/model. The software supports STL, 3MF and OBJ 3D file formats and also has a function that will import and convert 2D images (.JPG .PNG .BMP and .GIF) to 3D extruded models. The software will allow you to open and place multiple models on the print bed (each with different slicing settings if required). This allows you to print multiple models at a time, making classroom management of the printing process simpler.
Today is a new day, though, so I figure I'll give it another shot. After all, it seems much easier than trying to get the other software to run under Wine. There are a few forum postings with people requesting the settings to use FlashForge Finder in Cura as a manual printer, but I couldn't find any working replies. Using 3rd Party Filament With Da Vinci Jr.: XYZ printing offers one of the cheapest 3D printers on the market. Part of the reason they can do this is because they restrict their printers to only using their own brand of PLA filament. This guide will show you how to use PLA filament from any c.
Cura is desktop software that can be downloaded free of charge from the Ultimaker website and is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
We recommend Cura as the default slicing software for all schools as it is free of charge, powerful, quick to slice and very easy to get started with. Students in upper KS2 and beyond after some instruction can independently use the software to slice using the pre-configured profiles. However although simple to learn, the software contains over 400 expert settings, so more advanced users can tinker with the settings to produce prints of the quality they require.
Learn Cura
There are a number of online resources available to help teachers and students to learn Cura.
The Ultimaker website contains a comprehensive online Cura Manual, containing everything you need to know to use Cura, it also contains downloadable PDF quick start guides. In addition to this, you can access a number of Cura Quick Start Video Guides on the Ultimaker YouTube channel.
Alternatively, you can book a meeting with our Education Specialists to discuss Cura Training and Advanced Cura Training.
The CREATE Education Project use Cura as the default slicing software as it is free to download, powerful but quick to slice and simple to get started with. As each project may require different slicing settings in Cura, CREATE Education provide detailed slicing settings where required in all our project teacher guides to make learning and using the software even easier for beginners. We also provide a number of Cura specific resources to help you to learn some of the software features.
Note: Please bear in mind that recently the Cura software has developed further and has a new interface. This means that the screenshots in our older resources may not appear to look like the current version – however any functionality described in the resource still exists in the current version.

Cura is an open source slicing application for 3D printers.[2] It was created by David Braam who was later employed by Ultimaker, a 3D printer manufacturing company, to maintain the software. Cura is available under LGPLv3 license.[3] Cura was initially released under the open sourceAffero General Public License version 3, but on 28 September 2017 the license was changed to LGPLv3.[4] This change allowed for more integration with third-party CAD applications.[5] Development is hosted on GitHub.[3] Ultimaker Cura is used by over one million users worldwide and handles 1.4 million print jobs per week. It is the preferred 3D printing software for Ultimaker 3D printers, but it can be used with other printers as well.[6][5][7]
Technical specifications[edit]
Can you open snapchat on a computer. Ultimaker Cura works by slicing the user's model file into layers and generating a printer-specific g-code. Once finished, the g-code can be sent to the printer for the manufacture of the physical object.[8]
The open source software, compatible with most desktop 3D printers, can work with files in the most common 3D formats such as STL, OBJ, X3D, 3MF as well as image file formats such as BMP, GIF, JPG, and PNG.[8]
Major software versions[edit]
- 7 June 2016: Ultimaker announced the new Cura major release 2.1.2, superseding the previous 15.04.6 version (note the non-sequentiality in the major version numbers).[9]
- September 2016: Version 2.3 was a major release. It includes new printing profiles, slicing features, as well as increasing speed. It also supported the dual extrusion possible with the Ultimaker 3 model[10]
- 17 October 2017: Version 3.0 updated the user interface and allowed for CAD integration. This was the first version with plugin support.[11]
- November 2017: Cura Connect was released to enable users to control, monitor, and configure a group of network-enabled 3D printers from a single interface.[12]
- October 2018: Beginning with version 3.5, all files are saved in the 3MF format for improved compatibility with other 3D software. Hotkeys were introduced as well as a searchable profile guide. [13]
- November 2018: Version 3.6 introduced material profile support for materials made by major manufacturers such as BASF, DuPont, Clariant, and other members of the Materials Alliance Program[14] consortium.[15]
- March 2019: Version 4.0 made significant changes to the user interface. In support of plugin capabilities, a star-based rating system was incorporated to allow users to rate plugins. Cloud-backup functionality was added as well as support for more third-party printers.[16]
Plugins[edit]

Release 3.0 introduced plugin capability. Users can develop their own plugins or use plugins commercially available. Plugins simplify workflow for users by allowing them to quickly perform tasks like opening a file from a menu or exporting a file from an application.[17] Starting with Release 4.0, users can rate plugins using a star system. [16]
Current plugins include: SolidWorks, Siemens NX, HP 3D Scanning, MakePrintable, AutoDesk Inventor.[18][19][20][21]
Media coverage[edit]
On August 31, 2014 Cura was included in a review of 3D slicing software by Think3DPrint3D[22]
In the summer of 2015, Ultimaker released Cura 2.0.[23][24][25]
On January 1, 2018, All3DP named Cura one of the best 3D slicer software tools.[8]
In 2019, Cura was named one of the top free 3D printing tools by the industry blog, G2[26]
Cura was named Software Tool of the Year at the international 2019 3D Printing Industry Awards ceremony[27] in London.
